Photovoltaic (PV) is the technical word for solar panels that create electricity. Photovoltaic material, most commonly highly-purified silicon, converts sunlight directly into electricity. When sunlight strikes the material, electrons are dislodged, creating an electrical current which can be captured and harnessed. The photovoltaic materials are either machined individual solar cells or a single thin extruded layer, which make up a larger solar panel.
PV benefits the economy, the environment, and consumers. Our economic productivity depends largely on a constant and efficient source of energy. By using solar energy, our nation would not be as strongly affected by natural disasters that can lead to blackouts or to increasing energy prices from foreign providers. By going solar we will have access to local, clean, affordable, and reliable energy.
